I was talking to a friend recently. He told me that he was called for a job interview with a recruiter. He was told to arrive half hour early so he could do a computer test. This turned him off completely and he cancelled the interview.
I think avoiding the test is worse than failing. The test result may not have been all that important. As long as he could have demonstrated a simple level of computer competency, he likely would have been shopped around to that recruiter’s personal job market network, instead he withdrew from the chance altogether. This says a lot worse about him than if he had taken the test and performed poorly.
Formal assessments are increasingly used to screen employment candidates. According to The Association of Test Publishers, business for employment testing companies has gone up 10-15% each year for the last three years.
So be prepared for this step and do NOT shy away from it.
